Canton, Ohio – Directors Scott Zurakowski and Gregory W. Watts will be featured speakers at the Energy and Mineral Law Foundation’s (EMLF) 36th Annual Institute on June 21-23 taking place at Amelia Island Plantation, Amelia Island, Florida. Each year, the institute brings together a wide range of industry professionals throughout the oil and gas industry fostering education on laws and the regulation of energy, mineral, and natural resources. Zurakowski and Watts’ presentation is titled, “Can a Terminated Lease Be Cured?” The session will address case law in the Appalachian states regarding:
- provisions of an oil and gas lease that cause its expiration or termination by operation of law;
- the difference between ratification, revive, and a novation, and the effects of each on a lease’s validity;
- the interplay between a renewal provision or first right of refusal clause and the above concepts;
- statutory procedure for forfeiture of a Lease; and
- statutory requirements regarding the recording of a release of an oil and gas lease
Zurakowski’s practice spans all areas of oil and gas litigation, labor/employment, and business and commercial law. He counsels producers, drillers, and transporters involved in the oil and gas industry and his practice brings him before both state and federal courts in Ohio. A frequent speaker on a broad range of legal issues facing the oil and gas sector, he has earned the Martindale-Hubbell AV® Preeminent rating and is actively involved in a number of professional organizations. He serves on the Board of Directors and as Legal Counsel to the Better Business Bureau of Canton Regional & Greater West Virginia; is a member of the Ohio Oil and Gas Association; and serves on the Programming Committee for the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation.
Watts’ practice includes oil, gas, and mineral law and litigation and he has been heavily involved in the Utica Shale play in eastern Ohio representing clients and counseling energy producers in due diligence associated with mineral and lease acquisitions, and litigating and resolving title and lease disputes. He is a frequent speaker on issues of oil and gas law and a member of the Ohio Oil and Gas Association and Energy Mineral Law Foundation. Watts serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Akron School of Law teaching Oil and Gas Law and is the Editor of the firm’s Utica Journal Discoveries, an electronic oil, and gas newsletter.
